Residents of Galion should prepare for the city’s mosquito spraying operations, scheduled for Thursday, September 12, and Friday, September 13. Spraying will begin at 4:00 AM each day, with the northern half of the city being treated first on Thursday, and the southern half on Friday. Harding Way serves as the dividing line for the operation.
City officials advise residents to take precautions during the early morning spraying hours by closing windows and keeping pets and children indoors. This effort is part of the city’s ongoing program to reduce the mosquito population and minimize the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Safety Tips to Protect Your Home and Yard
To further reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area, residents are encouraged to follow these guidelines:
- Eliminate standing water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so empty, remove, cover, or turn over containers that could hold water, such as buckets, flowerpots, or plastic covers.
- Clean bird baths: Ensure bird baths are cleaned at least twice a week to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching.
- Proper tire disposal: Old tires are a common breeding ground for mosquitoes. Be sure to discard or store them indoors.
- Fix leaky plumbing: Repair any outdoor faucets or plumbing that could create pools of standing water.
- Maintain gutters and downspouts: Clear debris to ensure proper drainage and avoid water buildup.
- Pet care: Empty and refresh pets’ water dishes daily.
Free Mosquito Dunks Available to Residents
To further assist the public in preventing mosquito breeding, the Galion City Health Department offers free mosquito dunks. These environmentally safe dunks can be placed in areas of stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. They are available at the Health Department, located at 113 Harding Way East.
With these efforts, Galion aims to keep the community safe and reduce the risk of mosquito-related health concerns. Be sure to take advantage of these resources and follow the recommended guidelines to protect your home and family.
