$22.4 Million in Housing Grants Announced; Galion To Benefit

The Ohio Department of Development has announced $22.4 million in grants to 27 communities across the state to improve access to housing for low- and moderate-income families. Among the recipients, Crawford County, including the city of Galion, will benefit significantly through the Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP) program.

Supporting Safe and Stable Housing

The CHIP program, funded by the Ohio Housing Trust Fund and federal initiatives like the Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnerships Program, aims to preserve and enhance Ohio’s housing stock. The program offers resources for home renovations, critical repairs, and rental assistance.

Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of safe housing in his statement:

“We want all Ohioans to have a safe and stable place to call home, and these grants support that mission by improving housing, supporting homeownership, and creating opportunities for a better future.”

Lydia Mihalik, director of the Department of Development, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the transformative power of housing investments:

“When families have access to quality housing, it transforms lives and strengthens communities. We are committed to working alongside our partners to make transformational investments just like these that ensure every Ohioan has the chance to live their best life.”

Galion and Crawford County to Receive $1 Million

As part of the grant awards, Crawford County will receive $1 million to enhance local housing through various initiatives. The funding will focus on:

  • Rehabilitating 11 owner-occupied homes: These comprehensive renovations will bring properties up to current safety and quality standards.
  • Repairing 17 owner-occupied homes: Essential repairs will address issues such as roofing, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Fair Housing Initiatives: Educational and support programs will promote equitable housing opportunities in the region.

Crawford County will collaborate with the cities of Galion and Bucyrus to implement these projects.

Community Impact

These investments are expected to have a lasting effect on the communities they serve, improving the quality of life for residents while strengthening the local housing market. By focusing on home rehabilitation and fair housing, the CHIP program addresses immediate needs and builds a foundation for long-term stability.

The grant is particularly timely for Galion, a community that has worked to balance preserving its historical housing stock while addressing modern needs. These funds will further bolster local efforts to ensure safe, affordable housing for residents.

Building a Stronger Ohio

The CHIP program grants are part of a broader commitment by the state to invest in housing and infrastructure that directly benefits Ohio families. Through these efforts, the state aims to create thriving neighborhoods, support economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents in every corner of Ohio.
