A fund-raising concert for Holy Joe’s Café will be at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at the Galion First United Church of Christ at 248 Harding Way West in Galion. The concert will feature the Shawshank Big Band under the direction of Mr. Damian Boyd. The concert is part of the music ministry of the First UCC and is free, with donations accepted.
The Holy Joe’s Café is an organization that provides gourmet coffee to military chaplains and US bases and encampments found around the world. The Café started in 2006 when the First Congregational Church in Wallingford, Connecticut received word that there was a need for coffee at Sather Air Force Base in Iraq where one of their members was stationed. The chaplain of the base was paying for coffee out of his pocket to provide coffee 24/7 to all the service members at the base as well as service members arriving in Iraq. Since that time Holy Joe’s Café has provided a taste of home to all servicemen around the world. The mission is to promote a place for relaxation focusing on great coffee and relaxation for our troops.
The Shawshank Big Band is an organization formed to preserve the music of the Big Band Era. The band plays many transcriptions of the great songs of the 1930’s, 40’s and early 50’s. The band is under the direction of Mr. Damian Boyd, a noted area trombonist. The sixteen piece big band features talented musicians from around north central Ohio.
The concert series is part of the music ministry of the First United Church of Christ in Galion. The church hosts concert featuring the Shawshank Big Band on the last Sunday of most months. This concert will be held in the sanctuary of the church.
The concerts are free to the public. A free will donation is requested. The donation is split between the band and the Holy Joe’s Café.
