MOAC Updates Admission Fees Following New Ohio Law

The Mid Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC), of which Galion Schools is a member, has implemented a new pricing structure for admission to its athletic contests, effective immediately. This change aligns with Ohio’s recently enacted House Bill 147, which mandates a separate and reduced ticket price for students attending school-affiliated sporting events. The legislation is designed to improve access and ensure fairness in pricing for all attendees, though key exceptions and provisions also apply.


Revised MOAC Admission Fees

The updated MOAC ticket prices are as follows:

  • Junior Varsity (JV), Freshman Stand-Alone Contests, and Junior High Events
    • Adults: $6
    • Students: $5
  • Varsity Contests
    • Adults: $8
    • Students: $5

These changes were introduced to comply with House Bill 147, which became effective on October 24, 2024.


Understanding House Bill 147

House Bill 147 requires that schools charge students less than adults for admission to school-affiliated sporting events. Additional provisions ensure fairness in pricing, including:

  • Mandatory Student Discounts: Students enrolled in any school participating in the event must be offered a lower ticket price compared to adults.
  • Consistent Pricing Across Payment Methods: Schools cannot charge different prices based on whether tickets are purchased with cash or online. However, processing fees are permitted for online or credit card transactions.
  • Privately-Owned Facility Exception: Events held in privately-owned venues are exempt from the requirement to offer discounted student ticket prices. Schools hosting events in such facilities are not obligated to differentiate ticket prices between students and adults.

Exceptions to the Rule

The privately-owned facility exception is a significant aspect of the law, as it allows schools more flexibility when events are hosted outside of school grounds. For example, if a school-affiliated sporting event takes place in a privately-owned venue, such as a commercial stadium or arena, the reduced pricing mandate for students does not apply.

This exception provides schools with the ability to negotiate ticketing policies with private venue owners without being constrained by the same rules that apply to on-campus or public school facilities.
