Swing into Spring Softball with Colonel Crawford’s Club Team 🥎

Girls’ softball is more than just a sport—it’s a legacy. With a rich history dating back to 1887, when George Hancock first created “indoor baseball” in Chicago, softball has evolved into one of the most popular sports for young female athletes. Now, Colonel Crawford Youth Sports is keeping that tradition alive by offering 7th and 8th-grade girls a chance to step up to the plate for their Spring Club Softball team.

A Historic Game with Growing Opportunities

Softball’s journey from its early roots to today’s thriving leagues has been marked by major milestones. The first-ever women’s softball team took the field in 1895 at Chicago’s West Division High School, but competitive play for young women didn’t take off until the 1930s and 1940s. The formation of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) in 1934 standardized the game, making it more accessible for aspiring athletes.

By 1976, high school girls’ softball gained official recognition with the first state-sponsored tournament in Illinois. Collegiate softball followed suit, with the NCAA Women’s College World Series debuting in 1982. These advancements paved the way for young athletes—like those at Colonel Crawford—to pursue the game at a higher level.

Meeting Set for February 9

Colonel Crawford Youth Sports is hosting a meeting to discuss the spring club softball season on Sunday, February 9, at 4:00 PM in the Middle School Library. This session will help determine interest, discuss league structures, and provide details on what players can expect.

Organizers stress that this meeting is strictly for spring softball inquiries. Information regarding summer (15U) opportunities will be announced later via the program’s Facebook page.

How to Join the Roster

Players who are unable to attend but still wish to participate should contact Mrs. Jones or reach out to Josh Dyer at 419-561-1491. A final commitment is needed by Saturday, February 15.

With a sport that has shaped generations of female athletes, Colonel Crawford Youth Sports is giving local girls a chance to continue softball’s enduring legacy. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of the team and make history on the field!
