Stars, Stripes, And Sousa: Community Band Celebrates America’s 250th With Concert

The Galion Community Band is tuning up for a stirring celebration of America’s 250th birthday with its annual patriotic concert, set for Saturday, July 5, at 6:00 PM at the First United Church of Christ Pavilion, 248 Harding Way West in Galion. The free outdoor concert promises an evening of powerful music and community pride. In case of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the church sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and consider a free-will donation to help offset event costs.

A Program of Patriotism and Remembrance

The evening’s concert will open with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” arranged by legendary composer John Philip Sousa, followed by a selection of emotionally resonant pieces:

  • “The Blue and the Gray (Civil War Suite)” by C. Grundman
  • “The Fairest of the Fair” by J.P. Sousa
  • “Echoes from the Battlefield” arranged by D.W. Jenkins
  • “The Homefront: Musical Memories from WWII” arranged by J. Christensen
  • “Salute to the Armed Forces” arranged by Jari Villanueva
  • “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by J.P. Sousa, arranged by K. Brion and L. Schissel

Director Brian Treisch noted that veterans in attendance will be honored during the “Salute to the Armed Forces” and invited to stand with the band during the rousing finale. “We ask that those veterans who are able please come forward when their branch’s anthem is played and remain with the band for ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever,’” he said.

A Legacy of Community and Song

Formed during the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976, the Galion Community Band has been a proud fixture in the city’s cultural life for nearly 50 years. The ensemble includes skilled adult musicians from Galion and nearby communities, along with talented students from Galion, Shelby, Northmor, Colonel Crawford, and Clear Fork schools. Under the baton of Mr. Brian Treisch, the band continues to bring the sounds of celebration and remembrance to life.
