A fresh wave of support is radiating across Crawford County, thanks to Wombat Solar’s latest round of community grant awards. Nineteen recipients—many of them serving children and families—have been selected in what’s being called the program’s most competitive quarter yet.
From Outdoor Classrooms to Soccer Lights
Among the first-time grant recipients is Acres of Adventure in Sycamore, which is growing its outdoor classroom to expand agricultural education for local children. In Galion, Avita Health Foundation is preparing to break ground on a sensory play park designed for children with disabilities. Meanwhile, Bucyrus Area Youth Soccer will use its grant to install field lighting at the Lane Street fields, extending playtime and safety for local youth.
The grants are also helping longstanding events and services. Crawford County WIC is gearing up to host its 23rd Annual Baby Shower, supporting 40 expectant families with essential care and resources.
Meeting Needs, Not Just Megawatts
Wombat Solar’s Community Grant Program, now approaching its two-year mark, was launched with a simple premise: listen first. Leah Cordy, Director of Community Relations for Wombat Solar, shared that in early conversations with local organizations, a clear theme emerged.
“Every organization said the same thing: we have the people, the energy, and the ideas—we just need funding,” Cordy recalled. As a nonprofit leader herself, she understands how rural areas can brim with potential while still struggling to access needed resources.
“Meeting people and giving back to the area is the most important part of our mission,” she said. “We are proud to support the energy and creativity of these groups.”
Support for Local Histories and Health
This quarter’s other first-time recipients include the Galion Historical Society, Bucyrus Historical Society, Galion Grace Brethren Church’s “Gifts of Love” Pantry, St. John Lutheran Church Food Pantry, and Preserving Galion, a preservation advocacy group restoring the landmark Gill House.
In another vital effort, Crawford County Public Health received its second grant installment toward its upcoming GuardCare free clinic, scheduled for mid-August. The event will provide physicals, dental services, vaccines, and more—this year with the added benefit of eye exams funded through Wombat Solar’s support.
“Thanks to Wombat Solar, we can offer no-cost eye exams and we are extremely grateful for their generosity,” said Health Commissioner Kate Siefert. “The National Guard teams provide the care, but it’s local donors who make it possible.”
Building on Community Connections
While new groups joined the list this quarter, several community staples continue to receive support. Repeat recipients include the Bratwurst Festival, Salvation Army, Crawford County Agricultural Society, Jefferson Fire Department, Life First Ambulance District, Wynford Local Schools, Crawford Community Foundation, and the Crawford County Art Center.
Grants Now Open for Q3
