Avian Encounters Take Flight
Saturday mornings now come with a rush of feathers and applause as the Sanctuary’s brand-new Avian Encounters Area welcomes guests for close-up raptor shows at 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Perched on an open-air stage, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and great horned owls ride thermals only a few feet above spectators while naturalists share each bird’s rescue story.
More Birds Join the Cast
The upgraded arena also spotlights less heralded species. A pair of turkey vultures demonstrates nature’s clean-up crew, and Edgar the rehabilitated crow charms youngsters with his cache-raiding antics. Shade sails and tiered benches mean visitors can linger in comfort even on steamy August days.
A High-Wire Rescue Reminds Us Why It Matters
The Sanctuary’s reach extends well beyond its 90-acre woods. On July 31, Galion arborist Brett Woodard scaled a 45-foot sycamore at Pleasant Hill Lake to free an osprey ensnared in fishing line. After a quick checkup at the raptor center, the bird was strong enough to return to its nest the same evening—an inspiring example of community science in action.
Homeschool Program Down to the Last Few Seats
Families plotting next year’s curriculum have only “a few spots left” in the 2025-26 Homeschool Program. One weekday morning each month, students ages 6–14 trade desks for dip-nets and binoculars, studying ecology through hikes, labs, and bird encounters on Sanctuary trails.
Nature After Dark Returns September 13
The popular Fall Evening Nature Camp reappears on Saturday, September 13, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Young naturalists will dissect owl pellets, track night sounds, and enjoy an after-hours aviary tour—flashlights provided. Member tickets are $15; non-members pay $20.
Friday Walks Welcome Migrating Songbirds
Beginning September 4, naturalists lead “Spend Time With the Birds” strolls every Friday at 9:00 AM. The gentle boardwalk loop skirts wetlands where warblers and vireos fuel up for their southbound journeys, making the walk ideal for both stroller-pushing parents and life-list-obsessed birders.
