Across Ohio, the long-awaited hues of fall are finally beginning to show themselves. After weeks of delay, splashes of red, orange, and gold are now brushing the treetops as cooler air settles in. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the state should see “Peak” fall color within the next few weeks.
A Gradual Shift Toward Peak Color
“The weather has definitely turned more fall-like with cooler temperatures, which I am hoping will help fall color progress a bit quicker now,” said ODNR Fall Color Forester David Parrott. He noted that color change has been slower and more uneven this season, with many areas sitting between “Changing” and “Near Peak.” Still, the sight of red sumacs, purple dogwoods, and orange sassafras leaves offers a sure sign that autumn is finally catching up.
ODNR posts weekly video updates on its YouTube channel to track the season’s progress, giving travelers a chance to plan their next fall adventure.
Exploring Hocking State Forest
One of Ohio’s best autumn escapes is Hocking State Forest, 9,815 acres of rugged beauty in Hocking County. The forest offers 51 miles of hiking trails, 40 miles of bridle trails, and 23 horse campsites, along with rock climbing and rappelling areas. Visitors can take in the mix of northern and southern plant species that make this forest’s ecosystem unusually diverse.
A popular stop is Table Top Rock, about half a mile along the Buckeye Trail, where visitors can explore striking sandstone formations. Nearby is Fat Man’s Squeeze, a narrow rock passage beside a large cave that makes for a memorable photo stop. Big Spring Hollow, home to one of Ohio’s tallest waterfalls when water is flowing, is another highlight. Parking for these sites is available near Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve.
