Lowe-Volk Park, just north of Galion at 2401 State Route 598, becomes a magnet for nature lovers as the season shifts. The Lowe-Volk Nature Center—open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and weekends from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM—is run by the Crawford Park District. Questions? Friday, October 24 – 6:30 PM – Saw-Whet Owls
Ohio’s smallest owl takes center stage in this family-friendly evening. Bird bander Bob Placier returns with mist nets to gently catch and study the tiny Saw-whets that migrate south in autumn. A short PowerPoint presentation opens the night, followed by net checks, a children’s craft, and a campfire for keeping warm. Bring layers and plan to linger—these quiet nocturnal fliers are worth the wait.
Saturday, October 25 – Morning to Night
The park turns into an all-day nature hub
• 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM – Fall Bird Banding
Watch Placier at work again as he gathers data on the birds that winter in Crawford County. It’s a hands-on look at science in action, and open to all ages.
• 2:00 PM – Fall Foliage Hike
Naturalist Donald leads a relaxed walk through the park’s trails, pointing out how local maples and oaks put on their best color show before winter settles in.
• 8:00 PM – Viewing the Night Sky
The Crawford Park Astronomy Club takes over the field after dark, guiding guests through constellations like Pegasus, Andromeda, and Leo. If clouds roll in, the session moves inside the Nature Center. Either way, you’ll leave looking up.
Plan Your Visit
Lowe-Volk’s trails and boardwalks are easy to navigate, though sturdy shoes help on leaf-covered paths. Bring binoculars if you have them and something warm for the night programs. With the mix of birds, stars, and fall color, this final weekend of October is one of the best times to experience the park.
