The hum of summer activity is taking a deliberate pause at Galion Public Library this month. While sunshine still streams through the tall front windows, the Adult Services area is turning inward: staff member Jodie, the library’s Adult Programming Coordinator, is using August to reorganize, dream, and design. Regular attendees may notice an empty events calendar, but behind the scenes Jodie is testing games, sketching fresh display concepts, and lining up speakers to make the fall season sparkle. If you visit, pick up the special August Adult Programming Calendar for a teaser of her work in progress.
Summer Reading: Color Our World, Indeed
From June 2 through July 31, the library invited grown‑ups to embrace their inner bookworm during the annual Adult Summer Reading Program. The results surprised even the staff. Eighty‑one readers—nearly twice last year’s total—logged books, reviews, and good‑natured competition. One secret superstar tallied 25 books in a mere eight weeks, a feat that drew quiet applause at the final count.
None of it would have happened without generous hometown help. The Evergreen Company, Holly’s Book Rack, KC’s Aquaworld, North Central Ohio Media Group, and Three Bean Coffee House supplied prizes and support, turning every finished chapter into a small community celebration. With that success story still fresh, the Adult Services team is already plotting the 2026 theme, “Unearth a Story.”
An Orwellian Makeover—and a Few Dog Days
August may be light on events, but it is heavy on atmosphere. The library’s entrance is undergoing an “Orwellian” transformation—part teaser, part provocation—as staff gear up for an extended Banned Books Week celebration running September 17 to October 13. Expect stark quotes, thought‑provoking art, and plenty of conversation starters about literary freedom.
Elsewhere, the main front display embraces the lighter “Dog Days of Summer,” pairing canine‑themed novels and DVDs with sun‑splashed décor. A second display near the new‑books shelves honors World Photography Day on August 19, offering glossy coffee‑table collections and how‑to guides for shutterbugs. And near the community puzzle, a curved shelf salutes National Park Service Founder’s Day (August 25) with titles that span Yellowstone pioneers to modern climate challenges.
Mark Your Calendar: Bingo! For Books!
The programming pause ends with a familiar shuffle of cards and cheerful cries of “Bingo!” On Monday, September 8, the beloved Bingo! For Books! night returns to the Community Room from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM. Veteran players know the drill: arrive early, choose a lucky seat, and compete for bookish prizes while swapping summer reading stories. Newcomers are warmly encouraged—library staff promise easy instructions and friendly competition.
Why the Pause Matters
Stepping back to plan can be just as valuable as rolling out weekly events. By clearing August’s calendar, the library ensures volunteer schedules line up, supplies are refreshed, and ideas get room to breathe. For patrons, it’s a reminder to explore the stacks, linger over magazines in the reading nook, or simply enjoy the air‑conditioned quiet before September’s full‑tilt return.
See You in September
Whether you devoured a dozen novels, won a Summer Reading raffle, or simply strolled in for a cool respite, Galion Public Library thanks you for making June and July so vibrant. Enjoy the curated displays during August’s hush, and circle September 8 on your planner. The cards will be dabbed, the numbers will be called, and fall programming will burst back to life—one Bingo square at a time.
