Avita Unveils Sensory Playscape Project In Galion

On a warm recent Tuesday evening, a crowd of more than 120 gathered at 865 Harding Way West to witness a groundbreaking moment—both literally and symbolically—for pediatric health care in the region. Avita Health Foundation broke ground on its new outdoor sensory playscape at the Avita Pediatric Therapy Center, ushering in a new chapter of innovative care for children of all abilities.

Therapy Through Play, Reimagined

“The sensory playscape will be the first of its kind,” said Jerry Morasko, President and CEO of Avita Health System, standing before a group of supporters that included donors, patients, therapists, and hospital staff. “Not a traditional playground for Avita’s children, but an outdoor sensory experience disguised as play—one that will help children develop crucial skills while simply having fun.”

Designed to stimulate every sense—touch, sight, sound, smell, movement, and even temperature—the playscape will allow children to engage in therapeutic activities in a natural, engaging setting. The goal is to enhance sensory motor skills, communication, and emotional wellness in an inclusive space that encourages exploration and curiosity.

A Vision Years in the Making

The playscape is just one piece of a broader transformation happening at the Pediatric Therapy Center. Already, an activity court has been added for movement-based therapy, an updated pavilion for preparing nutritious snacks, and a greenhouse that helps children discover the roots—literally—of healthy eating. These spaces are not just for therapy; they are platforms for life skills, social bonding, and self-discovery.

“For several years, Avita Health Foundation has been raising awareness and funding to support the construction of a sensory playscape,” said Chuck Cangelosi, the Foundation’s Chief Development Officer. “With over $400,000 raised, we’ve already broken ground not only on this playscape but on an entire outdoor campus focused on healthy living.”

Cangelosi noted that more than 1,400 families are expected to benefit from the project, which has drawn generous financial and in-kind support from the local community.

Community Roots, Community Impact

The project is being designed by KD Outdoor Design of Wadsworth and constructed by Mansfield-based Adena Corporation. From the very beginning, the design has prioritized accessibility and inclusivity—ensuring that children with different abilities can experience the joy of outdoor play in a setting built just for them.

But the vision doesn’t end with construction. In the coming months, Avita plans to host healthy eating camps that blend nutrition education with physical activity and social engagement. These camps will help children make friends, build confidence, and adopt habits that support long-term well-being.

How to Support the Playscape

Donors still have a chance to be part of the legacy. Contributions of $1,000 or more qualify for naming opportunities, while gifts of $250 and above will receive special recognition. Donations can be made online at avitahealth.org/foundation/#donate by selecting the Women’s & Children’s Fund. For more details, contact Chuck Cangelosi at [email protected].

As the dirt turned over and construction vehicles rolled in, it was clear that the sensory playscape was more than a project—it’s a promise. A promise to local children that their growth, health, and happiness are worth investing in, one sensory experience at a time.
