Remembering A Championship

This weekend, Galion will celebrate one of the most defining moments in its sports history: the 40th anniversary of the 1985 State Championship Football Team. That season, a group of determined athletes, dedicated coaches, and loyal fans etched their place into Tiger lore. Four decades later, their victory still fuels pride throughout the community.

Friday Night Recognition

The celebration begins Friday, September 26 at Unckrich Stadium, when the Galion Tigers take on the Highland Fighting Scots. At halftime, members of the 1985 team will be recognized on the field, honoring both their historic victory and the lasting impact they left on Galion. For many in attendance, it will be a chance to relive a time when the town rallied as one behind its team.

Reliving the Game at the Theatre

The festivities continue Saturday, September 27, with a special event at the Galion Community Theatre. Starting at 1:00 PM, fans and alumni can experience the championship all over again with a full replay of the title game on the big screen. Doors will open at 12:30 PM, and admission is free. Coach Lee Owens, who guided the Tigers through their remarkable season, will deliver opening remarks and greet fans. He will also sign copies of his new book, The Spirit of a Team, offering personal reflections on what it took to build a championship program.

An Afternoon of Fellowship

Following the replay, the celebration shifts to the Galion Elks Club. There, alumni, fans, and friends will gather for an Ohio State Buckeyes watch party as the team faces the Washington Huskies. The gathering promises an atmosphere of fellowship, where old teammates and longtime fans can share memories and enjoy the next chapter of football together.

A Community Celebration

Organizers describe the anniversary as more than a sports reunion. “This anniversary is about more than football,” they said. “It’s about honoring the teamwork, dedication, and community spirit that made 1985 such a special year for Galion.”
