One festival is a “go,” but another is a “bust.”
Just as the Crawford County Fair is poised to begin, it has been announced by the City of Galion Wednesday that the Galion Oktoberfest will not take place in 2026, with city officials instead planning to work toward the festival’s return in 2027.
Mayor Brian Saterfield announced the decision in a statement posted Wednesday afternoon, July 15, on the City’s Facebook page. The statement followed questions raised during the July 14 Galion City Council meeting about the status of this year’s event.
Previous Committee Steps Away
According to Saterfield, the committee that organized Galion Oktoberfest during the past several years will no longer be handling those responsibilities. 1831Galion covered that story earlier this week.
The mayor said his office had met with two different entities during the previous week and a half that had offered to organize the event.
“After having conversations with and researching both parties, I made the decision that the best course of action is to cancel the 2026 Oktoberfest and work towards a bigger and better Oktoberfest in 2027 and beyond,” Saterfield said.
The statement did not identify the two prospective organizers or provide additional details about the discussions.
Festival Operated As A Private Venture
Although Oktoberfest has traditionally been held in Uptowne Galion, the festival has not been sponsored or operated by the city. The event has functioned as a private venture, with organizers responsible for planning and conducting the festival.
The city has provided utility service and other forms of support for a stated charge. Festival organizers have also been required to enter into an agreement with the city covering street closures and the use of municipal property. Under the City of Galion Codified Ordinances, the city has discretion to deny the use of streets or other public property unless certain assurances, including those related to public safety, are provided.
At various times in previous years, agreements governing those arrangements had not yet been completed at this point in the year. It was not mentioned whether or not an application had been submitted recently by prospective new organizers.
Attention Turns To 2027
Saterfield’s statement indicates that city officials will now focus on preparing for a renewed Oktoberfest in 2027 and future years. No dates, organizers or other plans for the 2027 festival were announced.
