For the first time this season, the Galion Tigers will run onto their own field Friday night, arriving carrying more than a 1-1 record. Galion’s 7:00 PM home opener against unbeaten Bishop Ready comes one week after the Tigers erased a 14-point deficit, drove for a late touchdown and survived one final threat to defeat Carey 21-17.
The opponent brings an entirely different kind of momentum. Bishop Ready has won its first two games while scoring 75 points, opening with a 41-0 shutout of Eastmoor Academy before winning 34-21 at Licking Heights.
Friday’s meeting therefore offers an early test of two teams moving forward in different ways: one through an unblemished start, the other through a victory that required nearly every bit of resolve it could summon.
The comeback that changed the picture
Galion’s season began with a 36-12 loss at St. Marys Memorial, and the Tigers appeared to be headed toward another difficult night when Carey took a 14-0 lead last Friday. The response began just before halftime, when senior defensive end Dominic Capretta intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Kane Hay then connected with Jamesen Glew for an 18-yard score in the third quarter, pulling Galion even. After Carey moved back in front with a fourth-quarter field goal, Hay led a 10-play possession that included a 52-yard completion to Blake Chelski and ended with the quarterback scoring from three yards out with 1:40 remaining. Carey drove inside the Galion 5-yard line in the final minute, but the Tigers held. Hay finished with 196 passing yards and another 32 on the ground, while Kyle Early led the Tigers with 72 rushing yards. Glew caught three passes for 58 yards, and Kurt Hay added four receptions for 66 yards.
Progress with warnings attached
The Carey victory supplied evidence that a young Galion team can respond under pressure. It also left behind a considerable list of corrections. The Blue Devils rushed for 354 yards, while the Tigers lost two fumbles, threw an interception and were penalized six times for 60 yards. Galion overcame those numbers with timely plays, but repeating that formula against a team averaging 37.5 points per game would be a dangerous proposition.
The encouraging sign was that Galion did not need everything to go right in order to win. The Tigers fell behind, absorbed Carey’s ground attack and still produced their best football when the outcome was on the line. Bishop Ready presents the next question: Can Galion combine that toughness with a cleaner four quarters?
A difficult visitor from Columbus
The Silver Knights have yet to trail in the loss column, and their first two results show they can win in different settings. Bishop Ready overwhelmed Eastmoor at home, scoring 35 points before halftime in a 41-0 victory. One week later, the Silver Knights went on the road and defeated Licking Heights by 13 points. The Columbus program finished 5-5 last season but won three of its final four games. Its fast start in 2026 suggests the Silver Knights have carried some of that late-season progress into the new year.
For Galion, the matchup represents a chance to build on the Carey victory before the stakes rise inside the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.
Home for the next three Fridays
Friday begins a three-game stay at Unckrich Stadium. Galion will host Shelby in its conference opener on September 11 and Ontario one week later.
That makes Bishop Ready more than the season’s first home opponent. The game is the opening step in a stretch that could establish the direction of Galion’s season. The Tigers have already shown that they can recover from a difficult start and finish a close game. On Friday night, against a visitor that has yet to lose, they will try to show they can carry that fight home.
The National Weather Service forecast calls for a chance of showers Friday evening, with temperatures remaining in the upper 60s overnight.
