Galion Middle School and Galion High School are getting ready to celebrate Veterans Day by having two special events designed to recognize military service and bring students together with those who have worn the nation’s uniform. The observance will include an appreciation breakfast on Tuesday, November 10, followed by a Veterans Day recognition assembly on Wednesday, November 11.
Both events will take place at Galion High School.
A Morning of Gratitude
The Veterans Day Appreciation Breakfast will be held Tuesday, November 10, from 8:00 to 9:00 AM, and veterans who are family members or special individuals in the lives of students in grades 6 through 12 are invited to attend an event featuring breakfast, patriotic music, and opportunities to connect with students. Students are encouraged to invite more than one veteran, although those attending the breakfast must be accompanied by an invited veteran.
Reservations are required. Families should complete the invitation and permission slip being sent home with students and return it to the middle school or high school main office by Friday, October 30.
Students Gather to Honor Service
The celebration will continue on Veterans Day itself, Wednesday, November 11, when middle and high school students gather at Galion High School for a recognition assembly at the end of the school day. The program will feature patriotic performances by the GHS choir and band, including the songs of all six military branches and the traditional playing of “Taps.” A special guest speaker will address the gathering, while a K9 for Vets presenter will participate. The assembly will also include recognition of veterans and their military service. The event is intended to give students an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and to express appreciation for their contributions.
A Tradition of Remembrance
Veterans Day is observed nationally each November 11, marking the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that brought an end to fighting in World War I which became effective on November 11 at 11:00 AM. Originally known as Armistice Day, the observance was expanded in 1954 to honor American veterans of all wars.
Unlike Memorial Day, which specifically remembers those who died in military service, Veterans Day recognizes all who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
For Galion students, the two-day celebration offers a chance to make that history personal, honoring veterans not simply as figures in textbooks but as family members, neighbors, and members of their own community.
Galion City Schools expressed its appreciation to local veterans with a message accompanying the announcement:
“Thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and the example you set for our students.”
The district looks forward to bringing its school community together in gratitude for those who have worn the uniform.
