Enjoy Great Music And Benefit Community Action Back Pack Program

Special to 1831Galion

The First United Church of Christ, 248 Harding Way West, Galion is partnering with the Shawshank Big Band to host community benefit concerts on the final Sunday of each month at 6:00 p.m.  All music lovers are welcome!

Each concert will have a free will donation. Half of the proceeds will benefit a Galion area charity and half the band. The concert  Sunday, October 27 will benefit the Crawford County Community Action Back Pack Program.

The Back-Pack Program is for Galion City School children K through 12. This program offers a bag of food to assist the family over the weekend. The program runs during the school year. This is currently providing students in need with food each week.  Funding for this program has been reduced this school year. There is a waiting list of more than 40 students, so your support makes a difference. According to OHCAC Crawford County Director Tammy Crabtree, the program provided 105 packs last school year but the need has grown.

The First United Church of Christ is hosting this music ministry to support the Galion and surrounding area needs. “Our mission is to serve the community, and music is a key part of our church.  It seemed right to use our facility for this concert series,” said Brian Treisch, a member of the church Consistory.

The Shawshank Big Band is a part of Mid-Ohio Jazz Orchestra, Inc. a non-profit organization formed to promote and commemorate big band music of the 1930’s, 40’s and early 50’s.  The Band is under the direction of Damian Boyd, a noted area trombonist, band leader and performer.  The Band is comprised of talented musicians from across north central Ohio including members from Wooster, Galion, and suburban Columbus.  This marks the over a year of benefit concerts played by the band as part of the concert series.

The concert will be approximately 90 minutes of music. The concert is free but an opportunity is provided to support the offering. There will not be a November or December concert.
