Ontario High School Jazz Band: Young Talent Takes Center Stage

The 22-piece Ontario High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Elijah Henkel, will showcase a dynamic selection of big band jazz, ranging from classic swing to contemporary favorites. Unlike many extracurricular bands, these students take jazz as an official class, rehearsing daily to refine their skills and understanding of the genre.

The Shawshank Big Band: Keeping the Swing Era Alive

Led by Mr. Damian Boyd, a highly respected area trombonist, the Shawshank Big Band is composed of talented musicians from across north central Ohio. With a mission to preserve and promote the rich tradition of swing-era jazz, the band performs authentic transcriptions of legendary big band arrangements.

Recently, the band played at the new Lyric Theater in Wooster, earning enthusiastic praise from audiences. Boyd sees this collaboration with the Ontario High School Jazz Band as an opportunity to bridge generations of jazz musicians.

“The Shawshank Band was started to provide education to area musicians on the history of the swing era and to keep this jazz tradition going,” said Damian Boyd. “We are excited to have the Ontario High School Jazz Band joining us for this concert.”

The group also hopes to partner with additional school jazz programs in the future to further inspire young musicians.

A Concert with a Cause

Hosted as part of First United Church of Christ’s music ministry, this concert is one of the church’s monthly performances featuring the Shawshank Big Band. These events not only provide a space for exceptional live music but also support local musical organizations.

“We hope to have a good crowd to hear some great music and to support a good cause,” said Brian Treisch, a member of both the Shawshank Big Band and First UCC.

The event is free and open to the public, though a freewill donation will be collected, with proceeds benefiting both the Shawshank Big Band and the Ontario High School Band program.
