Buehler’s Is Adding Three More Stops To Its Grocery Aisle

It’s a company that Galionites know well. Buehler’s Fresh Foods, the employee-owned supermarket chain with a grocery and OHLQ presence here, has announced plans to acquire three Sander’s Markets locations in eastern Ohio. This will expand its presence from 14 to 17 supermarkets across the state.

The acquisition, announced October 16, will bring stores in Carrollton, Cadiz, and Jefferson into the Buehler’s family. For a company that has built its reputation on neighborhood service and local connections, the expansion represents another chapter in a grocery business with roots stretching back nearly a century.

Three New Communities Join the Family

The three stores currently operate under the Sander’s Markets name, and Buehler’s plans to keep that name in place initially rather than immediately changing the signs outside. The company also intends to retain existing employees, giving eligible workers the opportunity to participate in Buehler’s employee stock ownership plan. That employee-owned structure has been a defining feature of the company since 2017, when Buehler’s transitioned from family ownership to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, commonly known as an ESOP.

For employees joining the company through the acquisition, the arrangement could eventually mean something more than a new name on their paychecks. It could mean an ownership stake in the business where they work.

Buehler’s president and CEO Mike Davidson has emphasized the importance of preserving the relationships Sander’s Markets has developed with customers and the communities it serves. The company anticipates making future investments in store operations and customer services, although specific improvements and timelines have not yet been announced.

A Growing Ohio Grocery Tradition

Buehler’s has been part of Ohio’s grocery landscape since 1929, when Ed and Helen Buehler opened their first store in New Philadelphia. Over the decades, the company expanded across north-central and northeastern Ohio, developing a loyal customer base through its emphasis on fresh foods, prepared meals, customer service, and community involvement.

Galion became part of that story in October 2021, when Buehler’s opened its supermarket at 230 Portland Way North, bringing approximately 70 jobs to the community.

The company subsequently strengthened its Galion presence with the addition of a liquor agency in 2022. Although the three newly acquired locations are well east of Galion, the transaction reflects continued growth by a company that has become a familiar part of the city’s retail landscape.

What Comes Next?

For Sander’s Markets, the sale marks a transition for three of its Ohio locations while the family business continues operating stores in Pennsylvania and New York.

Its remaining locations are in Corry, Franklin, and North East, Pennsylvania, along with Salamanca, New York. Financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed, and a closing date has not been publicly announced. For Buehler’s, the addition of three supermarkets represents an increase of more than 20 percent in its store count, a substantial expansion in an increasingly competitive grocery industry.
