Jobs Lost Locally As Home Delivery Service Ends After 70 Years

Yelloh, formerly known as Schwan’s, is bringing its iconic frozen food home delivery service to an end after more than seven decades in business. This move affects facilities across Ohio, including a location in Galion, and will result in the loss of numerous jobs statewide.

Ohio Facilities Closing, Including Galion

As part of its nationwide restructuring, Cygnus Home Service LLC, which operates as Yelloh, has announced the closure of seven of its Ohio facilities, impacting workers and local economies. One of the facilities shutting down is located at 1341 Freese Works Place in Galion, where 11 employees are losing their jobs. This is part of a broader plan to eliminate 92 positions statewide, according to a filing through the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Job Losses Across the State

The job cuts will impact several positions across the Ohio locations, including Galion. The 11 job losses in Galion include:

  • One area manager
  • One material handler
  • Seven route sales representatives
  • One route sales representative trainee
  • One senior material handler

According to the WARN notice, the layoffs are permanent, and no employees are part of a union or have bumping rights to shift into other roles. The company will ensure that affected employees are paid through November 22, 2024, and will continue to receive benefits consistent with WARN Act guidelines.

Other Ohio locations experiencing layoffs include:

  • Byesville: 10 positions
  • Hartsville: 20 positions
  • Hillsboro: 8 positions
  • Napoleon: 8 positions
  • Toledo: 13 positions
  • Troy: 15 positions
  • Hilliard, Lima, and Racine: Smaller cuts ranging from 1 to 5 employees per site

A Major Blow to Ohio Communities

This decision impacts not just employees, but also the broader communities that have relied on Yelloh’s services. The frozen food delivery service has been a convenient option for many Ohioans, especially in rural areas, for more than 70 years. The closures of these facilities mark the end of an era, as customers will need to seek other alternatives for their food delivery needs.

Yelloh’s layoffs come as part of a broader trend of workforce reductions and company closures that have been seen across the state in recent months. As businesses continue to adapt to changing market conditions and consumer preferences, Ohio has been experiencing a wave of layoffs and closures, leaving many workers in transition.
