This week on the Galion History Corner will share news of a history-related event coming later in April. Both of Galion’s history organizations will be included.
The inaugural Crawford County History Fair, organized by the Crawford County History Alliance (CCHA), will take place on Sunday, April 23, from 1 to 4 PM at the Lowe-Volk Park Nature Center in Leesville.
Participating organizations will offer complimentary items and some will also have items for sale. Door prizes will be available, drawn every fifteen minutes, including eight authentic signed and numbered Crawford County Bicentennial barn prints courtesy of the Galion-Crestline Chamber of Commerce.
The event will also see the launch of CCHA’s new History Passport project, in which visitors can collect stamps from different historical sites across Crawford County throughout the summer. In the fall, those with completed passports can win a range of prizes including a handmade copper kettle from Bucyrus Copper Kettle Works as well as other prizes from local businesses.
To help participants complete their passports, “get-acquainted” bus tours will depart from Lowe-Volk Park starting in late September heading to various sites across the county.
The CCHA, established in 2022, is a collaboration of Crawford County historical organizations and museums aimed at sharing ideas, promoting events, raising awareness, and enhancing the public’s understanding of the county’s history. The Bucyrus Travel & Tourism Bureau and both county chambers are financially supporting the passport project.
Participating organizations in the History Fair include the Bucyrus Historical Society, the Crawford County Arts Council, the Crawford Park District, the Crestline Historical Society, Friends of the Big Four Depot, Galion History Center, Preserving Galion Inc./the Gill House,, Harvey One Room School, the New Washington Historical Society, the Ohio Lincoln Highway (Hopley Monument restoration), and the T&OC Depot in Bucyrus.
Each Saturday, we post about local history. We call this series “Galion History Corner,” and we will be sharing not only stories about our shared heritage but also updates on history news here in southeast Crawford County.
This series is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Bernard M. Mansfield, whose “Your Historical Galion” was a fixture in weekend editions of the Galion Inquirer. Dr. Mansfield was a friend and family physician, and he inspired the current generation of Galion historians to continue his work.
