Preserving Galion Shares 2024 Year In Review

At 342 Harding Way West, the historic Gill House continues to transform under the stewardship of Preserving Galion, Inc. Throughout 2024, significant restoration efforts continued to bring new life to this architectural gem, drawing visitors and preservation enthusiasts from across Ohio and the Midwest.

Restoration Work

The Gill House has not only been a focal point for restoration but also a thriving hub of historic and paranormal interest. In 2024, the site hosted numerous paranormal investigations that attracted enthusiasts eager to explore the house’s storied past. These events, alongside historical tours, have strengthened Galion’s reputation as a destination for history lovers and ghost hunters alike.

Honoring Johnny Appleseed’s Legacy

One of the standout events of the year was the Johnny Appleseed Birthday Celebration, an annual tradition that pays homage to the legendary nurseryman and his ties to Galion and Ohio. The event featured the planting of an apple tree on the house’s east lawn.

Walks

The Eerie Galion Walks continued to enchant attendees in 2024, leading participants through Galion’s shadowy streets, blending historical storytelling with local legends.

As winter approached, the Merry Galion Walks highlighted the town’s rich holiday traditions. This year, Preserving Galion adorned the Gill House with festive exterior Christmas decorations, creating a seasonal landmark in the heart of the city.

Introducing Galion to Detroit

In an exciting outreach effort, representatives from Preserving Galion, Inc. traveled to downtown Detroit to present the Gill House’s history and its restoration journey. This presentation introduced the house—and the broader Galion community—to preservation advocates and history buffs in southeast Michigan, expanding awareness of the ongoing efforts to restore and celebrate the city’s past.

Support Through Donations and Grants

Restoration projects and community events would not be possible without the generous support of donors and grant funding. In 2024, Preserving Galion, Inc. received a series of impactful donations and grants that have bolstered their ability to continue vital preservation work on the Gill House and other historic initiatives throughout the city.

Looking Ahead

As 2024 comes to a close, Preserving Galion reflects on a year of growth, engagement, and community enrichment. With continued restoration efforts, exciting events, and growing regional interest, the future of the Gill House—and Galion’s historical legacy—remains bright. The organization looks forward to 2025 with plans for further preservation work, expanded programming, and new ways to bring Galion’s history to life for residents and visitors alike.

“We’re now in our 14th year of bringing this remarkable landmark back to life. It’s important to our local history and, because of the family’s connections, it is uniquely related to the history of American invention and industry.” — Preserving Galion Board member Thomas Palmer
