Empathy An Action: Galion Board Of Education Honors Students And Staff

The Galion Board of Education met Tuesday, January 7, to celebrate acts of kindness, approve new policies, and plan for the district’s future. The meeting began with recognition of students and staff who embody the Portrait of a Tiger trait of Empathy.

Walking in Their Shoes

Students Christian Kentosh (9th grade), Bentley Price (6th grade), Ruger Helton (5th grade), and Makhielyn Swango (2nd grade) were nominated by their teachers for their extraordinary compassion and understanding. Staff members Christina Parsley (HS Custodian), Fred Rinehart (HS Math Teacher), Heather Nicholson (MS Science Teacher), Paula Seng (Intermediate Intervention Specialist), and Samantha Altstadt (Primary Intervention Specialist) were also honored for their empathetic leadership.

Boosting the Community

The Board accepted two donations from the Arthur J. Freese Charitable Trust to benefit the Elementary Music program and Galion Preschool. Additionally, the Galion Booster Club provided funding for student athletic passes during November and December, enhancing access to school events for students.

Farewells and New Beginnings

The Board acknowledged the retirements of two dedicated educators:

  • Mr. Jon Stinehour: A Galion alumnus and military veteran, will retire at the end of the 2024-25 school year after serving in various teaching roles, most recently as a 6th-grade Social Studies teacher.
  • Mr. Dave Kirk: Concluded a remarkable 43-year career in education on January 5, 2025. Since 2015, Mr. Kirk has been an integral part of the High School English Department. Erin Strickler will step in as a long-term substitute for the second semester.

Board Leadership and Policy Updates

Melissa Miller was elected Board President, with Dennis Long as Vice President. The Board extended Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hartmann’s contract through 2031, signaling continued stability and vision for the district.

In other business, the Board approved the 2025-26 school calendar and implemented a new Civility Policy to foster respect among staff, parents, and the community. The policy will be displayed prominently across district facilities.

Looking Ahead

The next Board of Education meeting will take place on February 18 at 6:30 PM in the Galion Middle School Media Center. Residents are encouraged to attend to stay informed and engaged with their schools.
