In a social media message shared on Thursday afternoon, Galion City Schools provided insight into the complex process of making weather-related decisions during the winter months. The district emphasized its commitment to safety while acknowledging the broader implications of school closures on students, families, and the community.
Safety Is the Priority
“Safety and well-being remain our highest priorities,” the district stated, outlining the careful steps involved in deciding whether to delay or close schools. Recognizing the significant impact these decisions have on families and staff, the district explained that multiple factors are considered, including weather forecasts, road conditions, and advisories from the sheriff’s office.
Starting as early as 4:00 AM, the district’s operations team physically drives through the city to evaluate road safety. A final decision is typically made by 5:45 AM, giving families as much notice as possible.
Timing and Challenges of Morning Weather
The timing of inclement weather presents one of the biggest challenges. On Thursday, the team communicated at 5:30 AM, and conditions seemed manageable. However, the sheriff’s office issued a weather advisory at 7:44 AM—after buses were already en route. The district explained that attempting to delay or cancel school at that point would pose greater safety concerns for students and staff already traveling.
Balancing Safety and Community Needs
The district highlighted the role schools play beyond education. Many students rely on schools for meals, receiving breakfast and lunch daily. Closures can interrupt access to these essential services, a factor that weighs heavily in decision-making.
To support families during the winter, the district encouraged parents to ensure children are dressed for the cold. For families in need, the schools have outerwear and clothing available through their offices.
Looking Ahead
With subzero temperatures forecasted for next week, the district promised to communicate decisions regarding closures or delays as early as possible. The superintendent thanked families and staff for their flexibility and understanding, emphasizing that their goal is always to prioritize safety while minimizing disruptions.
