One More Friday Night, One More Chance For The Tigers

For the Galion Tigers, tonight’s final game of the regular season is about considerably more than finishing a football schedule. When Galion takes the field at Clear Fork High School in Bellville at 7:00 PM, the Tigers will be looking for their fourth consecutive victory and a winning record. They also will potentially place in the Ohio high school football playoffs, a remarkable change in circumstances for a team that entered October with a 2-4 record and three consecutive losses.

Now, with three straight victories behind them, the Tigers are 5-4 overall and have given themselves something that seemed increasingly unlikely just a few weeks ago: a meaningful Week 10 game with postseason implications.

A Season Turned Around

Galion’s October resurgence began with a 21-7 victory over Pleasant on October 2, followed by a convincing 27-10 road win over River Valley a week later. Last Friday, the Tigers returned to Unckrich Stadium and defeated Marion Harding 14-7, extending their winning streak and keeping their postseason aspirations intact.

The three victories have been particularly impressive on the defensive side of the football. After allowing 101 points during consecutive September losses to Shelby, Ontario, and Highland, Galion has surrendered just 24 points across its three October victories. Head coach Matt Dick’s team has found a formula that emphasizes limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities and doing enough offensively to secure victories. That improvement has made tonight’s regular-season finale considerably more interesting than anyone might have anticipated at the end of September.

A Tough Assignment in Bellville

Standing between Galion and a fourth consecutive victory is a very strong Clear Fork team that enters the contest with a 7-2 record, including a 4-2 mark in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Colts have been among the conference’s strongest teams this fall, trailing only Shelby and Ontario in the league standings entering the final week. Galion, meanwhile, is 3-3 in conference competition. Both teams have demonstrated their ability to compete in the MOAC, making Friday’s matchup an intriguing test of the Tigers’ late-season momentum.

A Galion victory would produce a 6-4 regular-season record, completing a turnaround from a 2-4 start. It would also strengthen the Tigers’ position in the Division V, Region 18 computer rankings.

The Playoff Question

Following last week’s victory over Marion Harding, Galion stood 14th in unofficial regional computer ratings, just two positions outside the 12-team playoff field. That leaves the Tigers with a realistic albeit uncertain path to extending their season.

Under Ohio’s computer-rating system, Galion’s playoff prospects depend not only on its own performance but also on the results of other teams whose victories and losses affect the final calculations. Consequently, even a victory over Clear Fork would not automatically guarantee a postseason berth. But defeating a seven-win opponent could provide valuable computer points at precisely the right moment. For Galion, the first priority remains straightforward: win Friday’s game and see where the final numbers fall.

One Last Opportunity

The 2026 season has already offered Galion players and supporters a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in high school football. After all, a team that appeared headed toward a disappointing autumn has instead battled back to secure a winning record entering its final regular-season contest.

For the seniors, Friday represents at least one more opportunity to wear the orange and blue, compete alongside teammates, and contribute to a season that has become increasingly memorable.

Whether tonight marks the end of the road or the beginning of another postseason journey remains to be determined. For now, the Tigers have one more opponent, one more Friday night, and plenty left to play for.
