It was a difficult moment in the not-too-distant past. Three weeks ago, Galion High School’s football team was sitting at 2-4 and facing the possibility of a losing season and an increasingly difficult road to the playoffs. Now the Tigers have won three straight, climbed above .500 and moved closer to the final qualifying positions in their Division V playoff region.
Galion defeated Marion Harding 14-7 Friday night at Unckrich Stadium, improving to 5-4 overall and keeping its postseason hopes alive heading into the final week of the regular season. More importantly, updated unofficial computer ratings released Saturday afternoon place Galion 14th in Division V, Region 18, just two positions outside the 12-team playoff field.
Three Wins Change the Season
Friday’s victory continued an impressive October turnaround for head coach Matt Dick’s Tigers. Galion entered the month with four losses in six games, including three consecutive defeats to Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference opponents Shelby, Ontario and Highland. Then things changed.
The Tigers reversed that momentum October 2 with a 21-7 victory over Marion Pleasant. A week later, they traveled to River Valley and defeated the Vikings 27-10. Friday’s seven-point win over Marion Harding completed a three-game stretch in which Galion outscored its opponents 62-24.
The defense has been particularly effective, surrendering only 24 points over the three victories after allowing 101 points in the previous three losses. Against Harding, Galion held the Presidents to a single touchdown. The narrow victory came against a team that entered the contest with a 5-3 record and had defeated Pleasant 28-14 the previous week.
Harding fell to 5-4 with the loss, while Galion secured its first winning record since early September.
Playoff Picture Comes Into Focus
Saturday afternoon brought encouraging news for Galion, although considerable work remains. According to Joe Eitel’s unofficial Harbin computer ratings, updated at 1:02 PM on Saturday, the Tigers stand 14th among the 25 teams in Division V, Region 18. Galion has accumulated an average of 9.8722 computer points, placing it immediately behind Northwood and Creston Norwayne in the competition for the region’s final postseason berths.

| 13 | Northwood | 5-4 | 10.1066 |

The Tigers are currently 1.2844 computer points behind Norwayne, which occupies the final qualifying position. That gap remains significant, but Galion’s postseason possibilities are far from exhausted.
Eitel’s current calculations indicate that the Tigers could finish with a rating as high as 16.4000 if they win their final game and other results fall favorably. Their projected rating with another victory ranges from 13.8000 to 16.4000. Those figures do not guarantee a playoff berth. Galion must contend with other teams pursuing the same final positions, and the results of games involving previous opponents will also influence the standings. But the new numbers make one thing clear: Galion enters Week 10 with a realistic mathematical path into the postseason.
A Valuable Victory Over a Larger School
Galion’s victory over Marion Harding carried additional importance because the Presidents compete in Division II, three divisions above the Tigers. Ohio’s Harbin computer-rating system takes into account the division of defeated opponents, as well as victories earned by those opponents. Consequently, defeating a five-win Division II program provides Galion with a particularly valuable result at a time when every computer point matters.
The Tigers have also benefited from earlier victories over Carey and Bishop Ready, both of which have contributed to their computer-point totals.
A Difficult Finale Awaits at Clear Fork
Galion’s final opportunity to improve its postseason position comes Friday, October 23, when the Tigers travel to Bellville to face Clear Fork at 7:00 PM.
The Colts present a formidable challenge. Clear Fork improved to 7-2 following Week 9 and competes in Division IV, Region 14. The Colts have been among the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference’s stronger teams this season, making the regular-season finale an important test of Galion’s late-season resurgence.
A fourth consecutive victory would give the Tigers a 6-4 regular-season record and considerably strengthen their bid for a playoff invitation. A loss would leave Galion at 5-5 and make qualification substantially more difficult. Under Eitel’s current projections, the Tigers’ rating following a defeat could finish between 9.6000 and 12.2000, depending on other results.
One More Friday Night
The Ohio High School Athletic Association will release another set of official computer ratings Tuesday, October 20. The final rankings will be determined after Week 10, with playoff qualifiers announced Monday, October 26. Only the top 12 teams in each region will advance, and the top four will receive first-round byes. Opening-round playoff games are scheduled for Friday, October 30.
