The dice will be rolling, the gamblers will be scheming, and romance will be complicating nearly everything when Guys and Dolls arrives at the Renaissance Theatre this August. Presented as part of the Park National Bank Broadway Series, the classic musical comedy will take the Renaissance Main Stage for four performances across two weekends.
A Musical Comedy Classic
Often described as one of the finest musical comedies ever written, Guys and Dolls transports audiences to a colorful, larger-than-life version of New York City populated by gamblers, nightclub performers, missionaries, and other memorable characters.
At the center of the story is Nathan Detroit, a gambler searching for a place to hold what he hopes will be the biggest floating craps game in town. While attempting to stay one step ahead of the authorities, Nathan must also contend with Adelaide, his long-time fiancée, who has spent years waiting for him to finally walk down the aisle. Meanwhile, high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson accepts a bet that leads him to Sarah Brown, a determined and straight-laced missionary. What begins as another wager soon becomes something neither of them expected.
Their stories come together in a fast-moving combination of romance, comedy, and Broadway spectacle.
Songs, Characters And Broadway Energy
With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys and Dolls is based on the stories and characters created by Damon Runyon. The musical premiered on Broadway on November 24, 1950. Its original production ran for 1,200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. More than 75 years later, its combination of witty dialogue, memorable characters, and enduring musical numbers continues to make it a favorite of theatre companies and audiences.
The Renaissance production promises a dynamic cast, energetic staging, and the mixture of heart and humor that has kept the show in the Broadway canon for generations.
