Ohioans can now carry a secure digital version of their driver license or state identification card in Google Wallet. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced the expansion of its Ohio Mobile ID program Monday, opening the technology to residents with compatible Android devices. The digital credential serves as a companion to the physical card, which users should continue to carry.
“Ohio Mobile ID in Google Wallet is now the latest in a long line of new features that save time and make it more convenient for Ohioans to interact with the BMV,” Gov. Mike DeWine said.
Privacy Built Into Each Transaction
Ohio Mobile ID allows users to review what information will be disclosed before presenting it. The credential is encrypted on the device and protected through the phone’s authentication system. If a phone is lost or stolen, its digital IDs can be removed using remote data-erasure features.
Mobile IDs are not displayed like photographs of traditional licenses. They can be presented only to readers equipped to decrypt and verify the credential, using technology similar to a tap-to-pay transaction.
“Secure identity is foundational to our mission at the Ohio BMV, and we have spent the last several years designing this program to safeguard Ohioans’ privacy while providing cutting-edge convenience,” BMV Registrar Charlie Norman said.
Norman said Ohioans had been asking for an Android option since the Mobile ID program began.
Where Mobile ID Can Be Used
Ohioans may use Mobile ID to verify their age or identity at participating businesses and venues, many state buildings, Ohio casinos and TSA checkpoints nationwide. Acceptance is not universal, however, and the BMV recommends that participants continue carrying their physical driver license or state ID. The voluntary program is available at no charge. Because it follows national and international standards for security, privacy and interoperability, an Ohio Mobile ID may also be used in other states where compatible digital credentials are accepted.
How to Add an Ohio ID
Android users can begin by opening Google Wallet or downloading the app from Google Play. From there, they should select “Add to Wallet,” choose “ID Card,” select Ohio and complete the verification prompts.
Once approved, the digital ID will be stored securely within Google Wallet and protected by the device owner’s authentication settings.
