Two cases of measles have been reported in Morrow County, bringing Ohio’s continuing measles activity close to the Galion area. The Morrow County Health District announced that it has received reports of two positive cases and is working with the infected individuals and people identified through contact tracing. Morrow County borders Galion directly, making the new cases of particular interest to residents in and around the city.
The Health District is encouraging people who have not been vaccinated against measles and are eligible for the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to receive it.
“We are actively working with these individuals and contacts that have been identified through contact tracing,” the district said.
Cases Follow Activity In Knox County
The Morrow County cases come after a series of confirmed cases in neighboring Knox County. Knox Public Health reported its first laboratory-confirmed case on August 3. By August 28, the county had identified four cases and was working with the Ohio Department of Health to investigate potential exposures. Knox Public Health also scheduled MMR vaccination clinics throughout September. The timing and geography make a connection between the Knox and Morrow County cases possible, but no public information located Thursday night confirmed that the Morrow County cases are linked to the Knox County cluster.
Part Of A Larger Ohio Increase
The new cases come during an unusually active measles year in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Health declared another measles outbreak in late July after related cases were identified in Ashtabula and Tuscarawas counties. By early September, state data showed more than 100 cases reported across multiple Ohio counties. The increase is part of a broader national rise in measles cases during 2026 as childhood vaccination coverage has declined from pre-pandemic levels.
Why Measles Spreads So Easily
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for as long as two hours after an infected person has left a room. Among people without immunity, as many as nine out of 10 who have close contact with an infected person can become infected.
Symptoms generally begin seven to 14 days after exposure, although they can take up to 21 days to appear. Early symptoms typically include high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. A blotchy rash usually follows, beginning on the face and spreading downward. People can also spread measles before they realize they are sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers infected people contagious from four days before the rash appears until four days afterward.
Checking Vaccination Status
The CDC says two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97 percent effective at preventing measles, while one dose is about 93 percent effective. Most people born before 1957 are presumed to have immunity because measles circulated widely before vaccination became common. Some people vaccinated before 1968 with an older inactivated measles vaccine, or those who do not know which vaccine they received, may be advised to receive a current MMR vaccine. Anyone uncertain about vaccination history should contact a healthcare provider.

Call Before Going In
Health officials are asking anyone experiencing possible measles symptoms to stay home and contact a healthcare provider immediately. Patients should call before arriving at a doctor’s office, urgent care center or hospital. Because measles spreads so easily through the air, advance notice allows healthcare workers to take precautions and avoid exposing others.
“If you are experiencing symptoms of measles, please stay home and contact your healthcare provider right away,” the Morrow County Health District advised.
For Galion-area residents, the appearance of measles in neighboring Morrow County adds another nearby public-health concern as officials continue tracking cases and possible exposures across the region.
