For Galion, Friday night at Highland brought a result that was painful enough on its own. It was also eerily familiar.
The Tigers fell to the Fighting Scots 24-21 on Friday, September 25, dropping their third consecutive game and remaining without a victory in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play. The final score has been confirmed by multiple statewide score reports and MaxPreps.
And if 24-21 sounds familiar, there is a reason. The last time Galion traveled to Highland, on October 4, 2024, the Fighting Scots won by exactly the same score. That night, Highland built a 21-7 halftime advantage, added a third-quarter field goal and held on as Galion fought back in the second half. Two trips to Highland. Two three-point losses. Two 24-21 finals.
A Season Turns More Difficult
Friday’s loss drops Galion to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the MOAC. The Tigers had appeared to steady themselves after an opening-week loss at St. Marys Memorial, winning consecutive games over Carey, 21-17, and Bishop Ready, 28-24. Conference play has changed the direction of the season. Shelby defeated Galion 31-14 on September 11. A week later, unbeaten Ontario came to Galion and won 46-28. The trip to Highland offered the Tigers an opportunity to stop that slide against a Fighting Scots team that entered Friday at just 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Instead, Highland earned its first MOAC victory of the year and improved to 2-4. The three-point margin made this loss different from the previous two. Galion had been outscored by 17 against Shelby and 18 against Ontario. Friday night, one possession separated the teams. But in the standings, all three count the same.
A Dramatic Reversal From Last Fall
The result also represents a sharp turnaround from the teams’ most recent meeting. Galion dominated Highland 35-0 at home on September 26, 2025, part of a late-season run that eventually carried the Tigers into the Division V playoffs and all the way to a regional semifinal against Shelby.
One year later, Highland returned the favor in a much tighter game. The Fighting Scots entered Friday having lost four of their first five games, including a 47-6 defeat against Shelby a week earlier. Galion arrived in Sparta looking for a reset. Instead, Highland became the team that found one.
The Road Gets Shorter
With four regular-season games remaining, Galion now turns toward a stretch that will determine what remains possible in 2026.
The Tigers return home Friday, October 2, to face Pleasant at 7:00 PM. After that comes a trip to River Valley on October 9, a home date with Marion Harding on October 16 and the regular-season finale at Clear Fork on October 23. There is time to change the trajectory. There is simply much less of it.
Friday night was the kind of game Galion needed to turn into a victory as the season crossed its halfway point. Instead, three points separated the Tigers from the result they were seeking. At Highland, even the final numbers seemed determined to repeat themselves.
