You do not have to travel far from Galion to find a good autumn view.
Across Crawford, Richland, and Morrow Counties, local parks range from mature forests and river bluffs to broad reservoirs, accessible nature trails, and small lakes surrounded by hardwoods. The best destination depends less on which county you choose than on the kind of fall day you have in mind.

Crawford County’s Standout Woods
For pure woodland color, Sears Woods deserves special attention. The 137-acre preserve southwest of Bucyrus contains towering maples, oaks, cherries and hickories, with a trail that reaches bluffs overlooking the Sandusky River. It is more than simply an attractive local woods. Sears Woods became part of the Old-Growth Forest Network in 2025, reflecting the maturity and significance of the forest. Crawford Park District
For an easier and more varied outing, Lowe-Volk combines deciduous and coniferous woods, wetlands, open fields, a pond and the beginning of the Sandusky River within just 38 acres. Crawford Park District
That makes Lowe-Volk probably the best all-around choice close to Galion, while Sears Woods gets the nod for the more immersive autumn walk.
Richland County Opens Up the View
The character changes as one moves a bit farther east. Clearfork Reservoir provides something Crawford County’s woodland preserves cannot: distance. The large expanse of water creates long sightlines toward tree-covered shorelines, particularly effective as October color intensifies.
Gorman Nature Center offers the opposite experience. Its network of forest, prairie, pond and stream habitats allows visitors to move directly through the changing landscape rather than viewing it from across the water. The park district maintains more than five miles of trails there, with grounds open daily from dawn to dusk. Richland County Parks
Morrow County’s Classic Fall Lake
For a traditional small-state-park autumn scene, it is hard to improve upon Mt. Gilead State Park. The park combines woodland with quiet lakes, picnic areas and short trails, making it particularly well suited to an unhurried fall afternoon. When conditions are calm, the trees ringing the water can provide some of the region’s best opportunities for photographing reflected color.
For those wanting something less developed, the county also has the Headwaters Outdoor Education Center near Mount Gilead, with about 150 acres of forest, wetlands and trails managed with a conservation and outdoor-education focus.
One Fall Day or Five
One of the advantages of living near Galion is that none of these requires turning a fall-color outing into an expedition. Choose Clearfork when you want the big view, Mt. Gilead when water and foliage are the priority, Lowe-Volk for an easy walk, Sears Woods when you want to disappear beneath the trees, and Gorman when several generations are heading out together. Or make October a five-stop challenge and see which one earns your own title as the best fall view around Galion.
