Throughout November, a shopping cart at a local bank could in turn become a lifeline for a Galion family. The Kiwanis Club of Galion is organizing a communitywide food drive from November 1 through November 30, collecting non-perishable food items for the Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission (OHCAC) Food Pantry. The effort invites residents to contribute everyday grocery staples that can help neighbors put meals on their tables.
Four Banks, One Community Goal
Participating financial institutions throughout Galion will have grocery shopping carts available to collect donated food items. Residents can drop off contributions at any of four locations:
- GBL Bank
- Firelands Federal Credit Union
- First Federal Bank of Ohio
- Park National Bank in Galion
The monthlong collection offers an easy opportunity to help while running ordinary errands, as even a few cans of vegetables or a box of pasta can contribute to the pantry’s supply of food for local families.
What’s On The Pantry’s Wish List?
OHCAC has identified a wide range of foods that are particularly useful for its pantry operations.
Among the most requested items are canned chicken and tuna, canned vegetables and fruit, hearty soups, peanut butter, crackers, and shelf-stable milk. The pantry also welcomes ingredients that can form the basis of complete meals, including spaghetti and canned spaghetti sauce, rice, canned beans, pork and beans, and tuna or hamburger helper.
Breakfast foods are another priority. Pancake mix, syrup, instant oatmeal, and muffin mix are all included on the wish list, along with macaroni and cheese containing a creamy cheese packet.
Additional requested items include cream of chicken or mushroom soup, Jiffy mix, and other non-perishable staples. Organizers ask donors to choose canned spaghetti sauce rather than glass jars when possible.
Another Way To Help
For those unable to purchase or deliver groceries, monetary contributions are also welcome.
The drive comes as the holiday season approaches, a time when grocery expenses and other household costs can place additional pressure on family budgets. By bringing together local financial institutions, Kiwanis members, and community residents, the November campaign offers a simple way for Galion to help meet a continuing need.
The final day to contribute is Monday, November 30. For additional information, contact Jody at Galion Building & Loan Bank at 419-462-4114.
