The first half of September will bring a full schedule of creative programs to the Galion Public Library, with activities ranging from handmade zines and poetry readings to Lego construction and fiber arts. Several programs will also take the library into the community, including two gatherings at Three Bean Coffee House. Most events are open to a wide range of ages and experience levels.
Turn an Idea Into a Zine
The month begins with Zine Making Club from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 1. Zines are small, handmade booklets that can explore virtually any subject. Although they first became popular as a way to circulate information about punk bands and underground culture, today’s zines cover art, music, fandoms, personal experiences and countless other interests.
Participants can learn how to make their own zines while enjoying papercrafts and conversation. Finished creations can be shared with friends or donated to the library.
Poetry Moves Into the Coffee House
Local writers and poetry lovers can gather at Three Bean Coffee House from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, September 2. Participants may read their own poetry, share work by a favorite poet or simply listen. The library will provide selections for anyone who wants to read but does not bring material, along with paper and pencils for taking notes ahead of the discussion. Drinks and treats will be available for optional purchase from the coffee house.
The library’s Poetry Club will continue the literary theme from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 8. The open-mic gathering offers a welcoming setting for participants to read original work or share favorite poems.
A Colorful Midweek Break
Coffee & Coloring returns to Three Bean Coffee House from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Wednesday, September 9. The library will supply coloring pages, books and art materials, although participants are welcome to bring their own. Available designs range from fairies and horses to mandalas, zentangles and seasonal scenes. Coloring is free, and purchasing a drink is optional. The program is open to all ages.
Young Builders Take on the Challenge
Lego Club will meet from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM Thursday, September 10. Young people of all ages can build their own Lego creations, meet other builders and try the club’s monthly challenge. The program is held on the second Thursday of each month.
Teens Get a Voice at the Library
The Teen Advisory Board will meet from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM Tuesday, September 15. The board gives teens an opportunity to learn how the library operates while offering their ideas and opinions about its programs and services. It also provides a direct way for young patrons to help shape what the library offers their age group.
Stitching Together Support for Hospice
Stitch Club follows from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM September 15. Children, teens and adults who sew, knit, crochet or practice another fiber craft are invited to attend. Beginners are also welcome, with assistance available for those who want to learn. Club members are helping create blankets for Avita Home Health & Hospice. Anyone interested in contributing may attend Stitch Club or contact the library and ask for Ms. Lexie.
Additional information about these and other programs is available through the Galion Public Library.
