A special evening of timeless swing music is set to help preserve Galion’s historic legacy. The Shawshank Big Band, one of north central Ohio’s premier ensembles, will perform a benefit concert for the Gill House Roof Project on Sunday, January 26 at the First United Church of Christ, located at 248 Harding Way West. The concert will begin at 6:00 PM, with doors opening at 5:30 PM.
A Historic Landmark: The Gill House
The Gill House carries a rich historical and architectural significance. Built in the early 20th century by Bloomer and Nellie Gill, members of one of Galion’s most prominent early families, the home was designed by renowned Detroit architect Louis Kamper. Kamper, celebrated for his work on Detroit’s iconic buildings, designed the Gill House as one of his final residential projects.
Adding to its historical importance, the home has hosted legendary figures such as Henry Ford and Thomas Edison, further solidifying its place in American history. Currently under the care of Preserving Galion, Inc., the Gill House is undergoing extensive renovations, with the roof restoration being a top priority.
The Shawshank Big Band: Keeping Swing Alive
The evening’s entertainment will be provided by The Shawshank Big Band, directed by noted trombonist Mr. Damian Boyd. The band is comprised of talented musicians from across north central Ohio and is dedicated to preserving the music of the Swing Era. Through transcriptions and authentic arrangements, The Shawshank Big Band delivers performances reminiscent of the golden age of big band music.
Known for their passion and precision, the group has earned a reputation as a local favorite. Their performances bring the works of legendary bandleaders like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Count Basie back to life, ensuring these timeless tunes continue to inspire new generations.
Supporting a Cause Through Music
The concert is part of the music ministry of the First United Church of Christ, which hosts monthly performances by The Shawshank Big Band. Each concert benefits a local organization or cause, with proceeds shared between the band and the designated group.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for people to enjoy great music while supporting an important cause,” said Brian Treisch, a member of the church and the band. “We hope to see a strong turnout to help preserve one of Galion’s treasures.”
The concert is free to the public, but freewill donations are encouraged. Donations from this event will be shared between The Shawshank Big Band and the Gill House Roof Project, helping ensure the historic home continues to stand as a symbol of Galion’s heritage.
