National closures are reshaping Wendy’s, but Galion has avoided the latest fallout. Wendy’s is shrinking its restaurant network across the United States, but so far the changes do not appear to be reaching Galion. Hundreds of restaurants have disappeared as the Dublin-based chain confronts declining sales and works to remove underperforming locations. At the same time, one of Wendy’s largest franchise operators has entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Despite those developments, the Wendy’s at 200 Harding Way West in Galion remains listed as open, and the Ohio restaurants connected with the bankrupt franchisee appear concentrated around Toledo.
Wendy’s Restaurant Count Falls
Wendy’s reported 5,724 U.S. restaurants at the end of the second quarter of 2026, compared with 5,969 at the end of 2025. Through the first six months of the year, Wendy’s opened 44 U.S. restaurants but recorded a net decline of 245 locations.
The company previously said it expected to close roughly 5% to 6% of its U.S. restaurants as it eliminates locations that consistently fail to meet performance expectations. Sales have also been moving in the wrong direction. U.S. same-restaurant sales fell 7% during the second quarter from a year earlier, while systemwide U.S. sales declined 8.2%.
Major Wendy’s Operator Enters Bankruptcy
Another concern emerged September 17 when Meritage Hospitality Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Meritage operates more than 300 Wendy’s restaurants across 15 states and employs thousands of workers. The company says it intends to continue operating its restaurants during the restructuring. Its Ohio subsidiary, Wen Ohio LLC, is also part of the bankruptcy case. For Galion, however, the geography of Meritage’s Ohio operations is important.
Meritage reported 12 Wendy’s restaurants in Ohio at the end of 2025. The company entered the Ohio market in a major way in 2015 when it acquired 15 Wendy’s restaurants in the Toledo area.
Galion Wendy’s Still Operating
Wendy’s continues to list its Galion restaurant at 200 Harding Way West with regular restaurant and drive-thru hours. There is currently no indication that the location has been targeted for closure as part of Wendy’s national reduction in restaurants. That does not mean future changes are impossible. Wendy’s has made clear that it is evaluating weaker stores across its U.S. system, and Ohio is part of a restaurant network undergoing substantial contraction. But the current developments offer no evidence that Galion’s restaurant is among those slated to disappear.
