We continue to share ideas for Galion area residents to experience new attractions and events in our “Summer Road Trip” series. Today, we take SR61 and I71 south to Columbus for an annual favorite, the Ohio State Fair, which this year will boast a new look in one of it’s iconic areas.
Butterflies, native birds and a refreshed shopping experience are among the new attractions awaiting visitors at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Natural Resources Park during this year’s Ohio State Fair. Located in the southeast corner of the fairgrounds, the park will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM throughout the fair. Visitors will be able to explore the new butterfly house, Ruthven Aviary and remodeled ODNR Gift Store, along with the park’s returning exhibits and live entertainment.
“We’re thrilled to be a part of the celebration of America’s 250th birthday and welcome visitors to ODNR’s Natural Resources Park with displays of red, white, and blue,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “This year’s state fair is all about honoring the people, the places, and the stories that have left a lasting impact on Ohio and across America.”
A Closer Look at Ohio’s Butterflies
The newly constructed butterfly house will give visitors an opportunity to see and learn about seven butterfly species, including monarchs and swallowtails. The redesigned attraction includes an ADA-compliant entrance and boardwalk, improving accessibility while also providing guests with better views of the butterflies and their habitat.
Nearby, the new Ruthven Aviary will introduce fairgoers to several familiar Ohio bird species. The aviary will feature mallards, wild turkeys, house finches, American robins and northern cardinals.
Outdoor Shows Take the Stage
The park’s shaded amphitheater will once again offer free entertainment throughout the fair. Scheduled performances include The Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show and K9s for Conservation, which highlights the role trained dogs can play in protecting natural resources and wildlife. Wildlife educator and adventurer Coyote Peterson will make a special appearance Aug. 5, sharing stories and experiences from his outdoor adventures.

A Cool Stop for Ohio Souvenirs
Visitors looking for a break from the summer heat can step inside the newly remodeled ODNR Gift Store. The store will carry hundreds of souvenirs, toys and clothing items connected to Ohio’s parks and natural resources. Guests will also be able to purchase the Ohio State Parks Passport, which features 76 adventures across the Buckeye State. Outside the store, the ODNR Information Booth will offer free maps, guides and other materials for visitors interested in exploring Ohio’s parks, waterways, trails and outdoor destinations after the fair ends.
