Sunrise Hike Comes To The Ohio Bird Sanctuary

Before the gates open for the day and the summer sun climbs above the trees, hikers will have a chance to experience the Ohio Bird Sanctuary at one of its quietest and most active hours.

The sanctuary will host a Summer Sunrise Hike and Breakfast on Saturday, August 1, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM. The guided morning outing will take visitors along the trails before the sanctuary opens to the general public, followed by a light breakfast and coffee. Located at 3774 Orweiler Road in Mansfield, the Ohio Bird Sanctuary sits just a few miles southeast of Galion near Clear Fork Reservoir. Its mix of woodland, meadow and wetland habitat makes the property especially suited for an early-morning walk.

When the Landscape Awakens

A summer sunrise in rural north central Ohio can transform a familiar landscape.

The first light may appear in shades of pink and orange above the reservoir, reflecting across still water before the day’s breezes begin. Along the sanctuary trails, sunlight gradually reaches into the woods, catches summer wildflowers and brightens the edges of open meadows. The early hour also offers a chance to observe wildlife during one of the most active parts of the day. Waterfowl and other birds may be moving between feeding and resting areas, while deer, foxes and smaller mammals are more likely to appear before human activity increases.

The sanctuary’s location near the reservoir creates a combination of open water, broad skies and protected natural areas. That can make sunrise especially dramatic, while the cooler morning temperatures offer a more comfortable setting for summer hiking.

Prepare for the Trail

The hike will cover more than one mile and may include muddy, uneven or slippery terrain. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for the conditions.

Registration is required. Admission is $15 per person for Ohio Bird Sanctuary members and $20 per person for nonmembers. Registration is available at https://pci.jotform.com/form/260765995551168.

After the walk, hikers can slow down over a light breakfast and coffee, bringing the morning to a close as the sanctuary begins its regular day. For visitors willing to rise early, the event offers something that can be difficult to find later in the day: a quiet trail, an awakening landscape and the chance to watch summer morning arrive one bird call at a time.
