The Galion Community Band and the Galion Community Chorus will present a combined concert on Saturday, July 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the pavilion of the First United Church of Christ at 248 Harding Way West in Galion. This concert will feature patriotic songs to prepare for the Galion Fireworks later that evening. Concert goers are asked to bring lawn chairs or can listen from their cars. There is parking at the church off of Harding Way West and Church Street. This is a free concert but a free will donation will be taken.
The Galion Community Chorus is under the direction of Mr. Randy Mann. Mr. Mann is a Galion graduate and a graduate of Heidelberg College. A long-time teacher, Mr. Mann has directed the Galion Community Chorus for three years. The Galion Community Chorus was formed in 1955 by then Galion High School choir director Mr. Herbert Kirchbaum to perform G. F. Handel’s “Messiah”.
This marks the second year the chorus has joined the Community Band for a Patriotic Celebration. The Chorus will perform “God Bless America” by Irving Berlin, “Cohan’s Big Three” by George Cohan, and “Ten Songs of America” arranged by Douglas Weaver. The chorus will be accompanied by Patty Neff.
The Galion Community Band was formed in 1976 for the nation’s Bicentennial by Mr. Tom Bowman. The Community Band has played at least one concert almost every year since its formation. The Band is currently under the direction of Mr. Brian Treisch. This year’s edition of the Community Band features talented high school students from Galion, Northmor, Col. Crawford and Clear Fork as well as adults from Galion, Mansfield and the surrounding area.
The Band will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” arr. by Sousa and Damrosch, “The Chimes of Liberty” by E. F. Goldman, “The Light Eternal” by J. Swearingen, “Salute to the Armed Forces” arranged by J. Villanueva, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” setting by P. J. Wilhousky, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by J. P. Sousa. The band will recognize those who have served our nation during the playing of ”Salute to the Armed Forces”.
The concert is organized by the Galion Tiger Alumni Band and is made possible by the donations from these individuals and organizations; The Galion Community Foundation, Metronome Music, Bill and Marilyn Stepro, The Galion Kiwanis, Brian and Brenda Treisch, H. R. Wolf Hardware, and Phil’s Deli. Assistance for this concert was provided by the Galion City Schools and the First United Church of Christ, Galion.
