Galion Board Of Education Recognizes Donation Of Art Supplies

The Galion Board of Education shared a heartfelt moment at its September meeting, recognizing a generous donation made by the family of the late Donald Heimlich. In memory of Don, his wife, Maryann Heimlich, has embarked on a mission to enrich the educational experiences of Galion High School students. Her donation of essential art supplies, including stained glass materials and various other resources, has made a significant impact on the high school art program.

Valued at approximately $5,000, the donation is already bearing fruit. Several of the high school art classes used the materials to create stunning stained glass projects, which were proudly displayed during last spring’s annual art show. High school Art teacher Haylie Bowlby continues to make use of the donated tools and supplies, providing students with hands-on experiences that foster creativity and self-expression.

Inspiring New Artistic Journeys

“We are immensely grateful for the Heimlich family’s generosity and their commitment to helping provide new art-making experiences in our classroom,” said Miss Bowlby. She also shared with the Board that the donated stained glass materials have had a profound effect on her students. The opportunity to work with this medium has not only broadened their outlook on art but has even inspired a couple of students to pursue art as a major in college.

Remembering Donald Heimlich

Donald Heimlich was known throughout the Galion community as a dedicated family man and a passionate craftsman. His hobbies spanned from building beautiful flower beds and lily ponds to woodworking and crafting intricate stained glass pieces. His talent for stained glass even led him to create cherished windows for family and friends, and he built birdhouses from gourds he grew himself. This creative spirit is what Maryann and the Heimlich family now hope to pass on to the next generation of artists at Galion High School.

The Heimlich family, which includes Don’s three children—Kimberly, Christopher, and Matthew—all of whom attended Galion High School, remains dedicated to his legacy. Maryann, herself a proud member of the Galion High Class of 1959, continues to embody the spirit of giving that marked Don’s life.

Continuing the Impact

The Galion Board of Education extended its deepest gratitude to the Heimlich family for their unwavering support of the arts and for helping enrich the lives of local students. This generous contribution ensures that Don’s legacy lives on in every project, every class, and every creative endeavor that unfolds at Galion High School.

“This act of kindness from the Heimlich family truly demonstrates how one person’s passion can ripple outwards and inspire many others,” said one Board member during the meeting.

Thanks to the Heimlich family, Galion’s young artists have the opportunity to explore new mediums, expand their skills, and envision futures filled with creativity and inspiration.
