Summer is in full swing, and the Crawford Park District is offering an exciting lineup of events and workshops at Lowe-Volk Park and Nature Center in Leesville, just a few miles north of Galion on State Route 598. This month’s activities are designed to engage the community with nature, outdoor fun, and educational opportunities. Here’s what’s on the calendar for June.

Annual Fishing Derby

Saturday, June 8 | 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Kick off June with the annual Fishing Derby at Lowe-Volk Park. This event is perfect for children ages 5-12, offering them a chance to enjoy fishing at the Lowe-Volk pond. Prizes will be awarded for categories like the biggest and smallest catch. Make it a family event and enjoy a morning by the water. Registration starts at 8:30 AM. Don’t forget to bring your own fishing gear!

Feeding Day

Monday, June 17 | 5:00 PM

Get up close and personal with the animal ambassadors at Lowe-Volk Park on Feeding Day. Visitors will help prepare meals for a variety of animals, from worms and mice to leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables. This interactive event is a great way to learn about the diets and behaviors of different species.

Mud Day

Saturday, June 22 | 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Celebrate International Mud Day at Lowe-Volk Park! Science shows that playing in dirt has numerous benefits, so why not dive in and get messy? There will be activities for all levels of mud enthusiasm, from a little toe-dipping to full-body coverage. The Jefferson Township Fire Department will be on hand to rinse off the mud, ensuring fun for the entire family.

Viewing the Night Sky

Saturday, June 22 | 9:30 PM

Join the Crawford Park Astronomy Club for a night of stargazing. Learn about celestial bodies and their fascinating details, such as the Big Dipper, Arcturus, Corona Borealis, Hercules, M92, the Cat’s Eye Nebula, Scorpius, and the center of the Milky Way. Experts will be available to share their knowledge and help you use telescopes to explore the night sky.

Archery

Tuesday, June 25 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Discover the art of archery at Lowe-Volk Park. This session is suitable for beginners and includes an introduction to archery safety and shooting basics. All necessary equipment will be provided. Archery is a great way to unwind and focus on precision, away from the distractions of everyday life. Registration is required, so call the Park District at 419-683-9000 to secure your spot.

Viewing the Night Sky

Saturday, June 29 | 9:30 PM

If you missed the first stargazing session, don’t worry! Another opportunity to view the night sky is available at the end of the month. Join the Crawford Park Astronomy Club to observe and learn about summer constellations and celestial phenomena. This is an excellent way to spend a peaceful evening under the stars.
