Visitors to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary have a chance to see feathers, talons and natural adaptations from a much closer perspective this summer during “Wings & Things,” a seasonal Saturday program featuring the sanctuary’s Avian Ambassadors.
The half-hour presentations will introduce audience members to birds that serve as educational representatives for their wild counterparts. Sanctuary staff will discuss how the animals behave, the environments in which they live and the physical characteristics that help them survive. The experience takes place in the sanctuary’s Avian Encounters Area, where the setting allows visitors to move beyond simply viewing wildlife from a distance.
Birds With A Story To Tell
Avian Ambassadors often include birds that cannot safely return to the wild because of an injury, disability or other circumstance. Through educational programs, they help visitors understand the challenges wild animals face and the roles different species play within their ecosystems. Each “Wings & Things” presentation offers an opportunity to observe those animals while learning about their natural behaviors and remarkable adaptations. Because the program may include free-flight behaviors, all audience members must be at least 6 years old. The age requirement helps provide a controlled environment for the animals, presenters and visitors.
Summer Saturdays
Programs are planned for most Saturdays through September 5, running from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM. Not every Saturday will include a presentation. Visitors should check the ticket form before making plans, as any date that does not appear on the form has no show scheduled. Dates may also change.
Tickets cost $5 per person and may be purchased online here.
The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is located at 3774 Orweiler Road in Mansfield, just a few miles south and east of Galion near Clearfork Reservoir. Beyond the scheduled presentation, the sanctuary offers visitors a wooded setting filled with aviaries, trails and opportunities to learn about native wildlife.
For families searching for a summer outing that is both entertaining and educational, “Wings & Things” provides a chance to spend part of a Saturday face-to-face with some of Ohio’s most fascinating feathered residents.
