The circus is coming to town, but this one is trading bright lights and family-friendly spectacle for sinister characters, darkened stages and a decidedly Halloween atmosphere — and it’s just a few minutes east of Galion along US30. Horror Circus will take over the Richland County Fairgrounds on Sunday, September 27, offering a 90-minute production that combines traditional circus-style performance with theatrical horror, suspense and comedy.
The show begins at 7:00 PM and runs until 8:30 PM at the fairgrounds, 750 N. Home Road. Tickets are listed at $30, with the production recommended for audiences ages 13 and older.
Where circus meets horror
The Mansfield production is billed as an immersive PG-13 experience rather than a conventional circus. Organizers describe a combination of circus acts, creepy characters, theatrical lighting, music, intense visuals and unexpected moments, with humor mixed among the scares. The result is designed to land somewhere between a live circus, a theatrical production and a Halloween attraction.
That darker approach has increasingly become its own branch of touring entertainment, replacing the traditional big-top atmosphere with horror imagery and performers working within a more theatrical storyline. A Horror Circus performance scheduled just four days later, on October 1 at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State University at Tuscarawas, is presented by Taconhy Entertainment and uses a nearly identical description of the production. That show also carries a 13-and-older recommendation.
Taconhy traces its circus roots to Argentina in 1964 and describes itself today as a four-generation entertainment company producing touring circus spectacles. Its current productions include darker horror-themed circus shows alongside more traditional entertainment.
Not a circus for small children
The age recommendation is worth noting for families accustomed to thinking of a circus as children’s entertainment. The Mansfield listing specifically identifies Horror Circus as a PG-13 experience and recommends attendance for those 13 and older.
Taconhy’s more intensely marketed Fear Circus production provides an indication of how far the company’s horror concept can go, featuring aerialists and contortionists alongside sinister clowns, darkness, loud sound and theatrical effects. Its published warnings include simulated violence, strobe lighting and haze. Those specific effects are not all promised on the Mansfield event listing, however, so audiences should not assume the two productions are identical. What Mansfield organizers do promise is a night built around suspense, horror imagery and circus performance, with what they describe as “twisted surprises” along the way.
An early start to Halloween season
The September 27 appearance places Horror Circus in Mansfield just as October’s haunted attractions and Halloween events begin arriving across north central Ohio. Unlike a haunted house, though, this is a seated live performance with a defined 90-minute running time.
