With the new school year approaching, Galion City Schools is reminding families to make sure student immunization records are current before classes begin. The district’s school nurse is asking parents and guardians to review vaccination records now, particularly for students entering grade levels where additional immunizations are required under Ohio law.
Keeping those records up to date, the district says, can help families avoid problems once the school year gets underway.
Three Grade Levels to Check
- Incoming kindergarten students must have the vaccinations required for school entry.
- Students entering seventh grade need required adolescent vaccinations, including Tdap and meningococcal vaccines.
- Students beginning 12th grade are required to have a meningococcal booster.
Families should also make certain that updated immunization records have been submitted to the Galion City Schools nurse.
September 3 Deadline
The district has set Thursday, September 3 as the deadline for submitting vaccination records or completed exemption forms. Families who already have a vaccination appointment scheduled should notify the school secretary that an appointment is pending. Students who do not have the required documentation on file by the deadline may not be permitted to attend school beginning Friday, September 4 until the requirements have been met.
A Good Time to Check the Records
Galion City Schools is encouraging families whose children have recently received vaccines to send an updated copy of those records to the school nurse. Parents and guardians with questions about immunization requirements or exemption forms may contact the school nurse or their healthcare provider.
With the first day of school drawing closer, the district’s message is a practical one: check the records now, take care of anything that remains outstanding, and make sure students are ready when the new school year begins.
