Parents in the Galion area have another opportunity to explore the various challenges of raising children in today’s world, as Galion City Schools launches the second installment of its Raising Tigers parent learning series on Monday, October 19, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Galion Primary School. This month’s discussion will focus on the decline of play and its impact on childhood development. This is a subject that has attracted increasing attention nationally as families navigate the influence of technology and changing social habits.
Organizers have shared that newcomers are welcome, even if they missed the series’ opening session on September 28.
A Conversation for Every Parent
Raising Tigers is designed to bring parents and guardians together for conversations about the realities of raising children, from the earliest years through adolescence. Participation is not limited to families with children enrolled in Galion City Schools, rather parents and guardians of children of all ages are invited to attend, making the series a resource for the broader community. Discussions draw on themes explored in The Anxious Generation, a book by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt that examines the relationship between modern childhood, digital technology, and mental health.
Participants will receive a free copy of the book, and organizers are willing to arrange a brief introductory meeting with anyone who missed the first session. That opportunity allows newcomers to obtain the reading material, catch up on earlier discussions, and prepare for the October gathering.
Free childcare is also available for children ages 10 and younger, removing a potential obstacle for parents who might otherwise have difficulty attending.
Why Play Matters
Monday’s session will examine how opportunities for traditional childhood play have changed, and also what those changes might mean for children’s social, emotional, and developmental well-being.
Questions about the importance of independent play and face-to-face interaction have become part of a broader national conversation as smartphones, electronic entertainment, and increasingly structured schedules occupy larger portions of childhood.
The Raising Tigers series offers local families an opportunity to consider those questions together, share experiences, and explore how parents can respond to changing expectations and pressures. The program is intended to encourage discussion rather than require participants to arrive with answers.
More Conversations Ahead
Two more sessions are coming before the end of the year. The November 16 gathering will address screen time and the brain, looking at how digital technology influences children and adolescents. The December 14 session, titled What We Can Do Together, will then shift the conversation toward practical ways families and the community can support healthier childhoods. Both meetings are scheduled for Mondays from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Galion Primary School.
For parents who have been considering participating, organizers stress that there is still time to become involved. Attending the September meeting is not a prerequisite, and families can join the conversation at any point in the series.
Those interested in participating or obtaining a copy of The Anxious Generation are encouraged to contact Galion City Schools to make arrangements before the next meeting.
