Mushroom Magic Takes Root At OSU Mansfield

Fresh culinary mushrooms can begin with a hardwood log, a drill and a little patience. The Ohio Woodland Stewards Program will introduce participants to that process during a Lunch and Learn workshop on Tuesday, August 25, at The Ohio State University at Mansfield. “Growing Culinary Mushrooms on Logs” will run from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Ovalwood Hall. The program combines lunch and instruction with practical experience in outdoor mushroom cultivation.

Participants will learn how culinary mushrooms can be grown on hardwood logs before putting that knowledge to work. Each person will drill and inoculate a log for shiitake mushrooms, then take it home to continue the growing process.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The workshop is part of the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program’s 2026 Lunch and Learn series, which explores subjects connected to Ohio’s forests and wildlife. Programs begin with lunch before participants head outdoors for further instruction and hands-on activities.

The mushroom workshop follows an April program on wet meadow enhancement. A third session, focusing on non-native worms, is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21.

Registration Details

The workshop costs $15 per person, including lunch and take-home materials. Registration is required by Thursday, August 20. Participants can register through the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program at woodlandstewards.osu.edu.
