The Music of Motown, a collaboration with Alice Bond, (The Temptations, The Four Tops), and Condrea Cannada, (At Last: An Evening with Etta James, Ohio Idol, Sister Act), is a retrospective of the all-time greatest hits that ever came out of the Motor City. This one night event will take place on the Renaissance Stage in Mansfield on Friday, May 12 at 8:00pm. Tickets begin at $15 and include a “date night” option that includes wine and a dessert for two.
Alice Bond (arranger/musical director and keyboards) and Condrea Cannada (vocals) will be joined by singers Deon Taylor, Najee Rawls, Jody Odom Jr., and Genell Hudson.
The concert will feature such two dozen songs, including: ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’ ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine,’ ‘Please Mr. Postman,’ ‘My Guy,’ ‘It’s a Shame,’ ‘Baby Love,’ ‘I Hear a Symphony,’ ‘Heatwave,’ ‘Midnight Train to Georgia,’ ‘Never Can Say Goodbye,’ ‘I’ll Be There,’ ‘How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You,’ ‘Second That Emotion,’ ‘Tears of a Clown,’ ‘My Girl,’ ‘Just My Imagination.’
The word “Motown” has become synonymous with some of the most prolific African-American singers, songwriters, and ensembles in American history. The music of Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, the Marveleetes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, and Tina Marie changed society at large by creating sounds that are considered the most significant musical accomplishments of the 20th century. Often called the “Sound of Young America,” the distinctive music brought together white and black, old and young, and rock and pop, blues and soul in a way that no other music had ever been able to achieve.
The Music of Motown will begin at the start of the Motown era in 1959 when Berry Gordy founded Motown Records and tell the story that began from there in what became one of the most significant musical contributions in American history.
