In a Saturday post on its Facebook page, organizers of Galion’s Pickle Run Festival shared:

“I wanted to take a moment to update the community about the Pickle Run Festival. After weeks of thought and consideration, we have decided that the festival will not be returning this year. We are thankful for all of the volunteers that have helped over the years and the community for their support. We will miss everyone that we have met along the way and wish you the best.”

Supportive comments including words of thanks followed, including for long-time event volunteer organizer Sarah Capretta, as well as questions about another person or team possibly taking over the event.

Hosted by the Galion Boosters Club, the first Pickle Run Festival took place in September 1978 and was focused on raising money for tennis courts and sports programming at Galion High School. Events taking place that first year included the following, among others and in addition to rides and live entertainment:

  • Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest
  • Shuffleboard Tournament
  • Frisbee Contest
  • Golf Chipping Contest
  • Watermelon Fight
  • Bike Tours
  • Horseshoe and Darts Tournament
  • Antique Car Show
  • Barbecue Dinner
  • Sack Races
  • Flea Market
  • Arts and Craft Show

Approximately 40 volunteers were behind the event. The general chairperson was Mrs. John McDavid.
