We’re back! To be honest, we had absolutely no expectation a few months ago that this particular thing would be happening on this particular day. Life has a way of throwing curveballs, however, and sometimes you just have to stand at the plate and swing for the seats.
It is thrilling to be able to share again just what 1831Galion is. This is a bit about us.
All across America, the media landscape is changing at a furious pace. Traditional news operations, particularly those that publish print newspapers, have had to adapt to new ways in which readers consume information. As a result, traditional newsrooms have shrunk as they experience circulation drops and falling revenues.
In response to these changes, a variety of new types of media have been springing up in some surprising places. Many of these are housed in America’s urban centers. Some of the most successful, however, have arrived in mid-sized cities and even smaller communities. These include operations that are not tied to so-called “legacy” products (existing newspapers or television stations) but instead are independent and exclusively online.
In Galion, this decline is keenly felt. In fact, we increasingly live and work in what is known as a “news desert.” With the decline of our local newspaper, which now publishes once a week and has a limited amount of news from here; with the loss of a hometown radio station news department; and with a decreasing amount of attention paid to this community from area media that do survive, we’re pretty much left on our own here. This, in turn, fuels social media as the primary way Galionites talk to each other. It’s not the participants fault – it’s all they really have. That reliance, however, brings its own set of challenges.
1831Galion is the sister site of 1808Delaware, which is the only daily updated, free-to-access news and information website in Delaware County and northern Franklin County (visit us here). That operation has been running for many years. Our newest site, a community magazine, is arriving in Mansfield later this year.
We’ll have a conversation soon about the ways in which we operate. You will always be able to engage with us through Facebook or email ([email protected]).
We are one-of-a-kind, mobile-focused, social media-driven, passionately pro Galion, and on a roll. Thank you for reading this, and we invite you to visit often.
