Summer Road Trip: The Revolution Comes To Life In Richland County

It’s another in our series on Summer Road Trips from the Galion area, this one right next door. The American Revolution was fought by more than the familiar figures whose names fill history books. It was also shaped by soldiers, families and ordinary people whose individual experiences reveal what the struggle for independence meant on the ground. Those stories will come to Richland County beginning Tuesday, Aug. 18, when the American Revolution Experience opens at the Samuel D. Isaly Library of the Ohio Genealogical Society, 611 State Route 97 West in Bellville.

Hosted locally by the Jared Mansfield Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the traveling exhibition combines traditional displays with interactive technology to connect modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the nation’s founding.

History Told Through Individual Lives

The exhibition features 12 illustrated panels exploring connections among people who experienced the Revolution, along with three interactive digital kiosks. Visitors can use the kiosks to explore full biographies, examine historical documents and learn more about the war and its setting. The exhibit also identifies places connected with the featured individuals that can still be visited today.

Custom illustrations by South Carolina artist Dale Watson help bring those stories to life. The exhibition draws upon documents and objects in the DAR’s collection, along with digital interpretive resources developed by the American Battlefield Trust.

The American Revolution Experience was created through a collaboration between the Trust and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. It was also supported by matching funds from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program battlefield interpretation grants.

Programs Bring the Colonial Era Closer

The exhibition will remain at the Ohio Genealogical Society library through Friday, Aug. 28. It will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Special programming will be presented at 2:00 PM each day, with subjects including colonial clothing, beginning genealogy and Richland County history. A colonial militia re-enactor will visit at 2:00 PM on Friday, Aug. 21, offering a closer look at military and everyday life in New England during the Revolution.

The programs provide an opportunity to move beyond military campaigns and political declarations and consider how the Revolutionary era affected what people wore, how they lived and the choices they faced.

A Second Stop in Mansfield

After its Bellville engagement, the American Revolution Experience will move to the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, 43 W. Third St. in Mansfield. It will open there Saturday, Aug. 29, and continue through Saturday, Sept. 5. George Washington will make a special appearance in the Main Library’s Community Room at 2:00 PM on Aug. 29 for a presentation on the “Miracle of the Crossing of the Delaware.” The famous crossing took place during the night of Dec. 25–26, 1776, when Washington led Continental forces across the icy Delaware River before their victory at Trenton.

Additional programming will be offered at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 2, when visitors can learn about clothing worn during the colonial period.

From an Online Success to a Traveling Exhibit

The American Revolution Experience began as a digital-only project in the summer of 2022. Its online debut received a Bronze Award in the Education, Art and Culture division of the second annual Anthem Awards, an initiative of the Webby Awards honoring purpose-driven work. It was also a finalist for a Webby People’s Voice Award. The traveling version now gives visitors a chance to encounter that material in person while retaining access to the deeper biographies and historical resources available through its digital components. By focusing on individual lives, the exhibit offers a reminder that the American Revolution was not simply a sequence of battles. It was a human story, shaped by people whose experiences continue to illuminate the nation they helped create.
